Moeen Hits Winning Run As England Rewrite Record Books

Moeen Hits Winning Run As England Rewrite Record Books

Moeen Ali hit the winning run after an impressive bowling performance as England rewrote the record books to keep alive their ICC World T20 hopes with a two wicket win over South Africa in Mumbai.

The Worcestershire all-rounder collected a single off Kyle Abbott – one of the County's 2016 overseas players – to see England home with two balls to spare.

Their successful pursuit of a 230 target was the second biggest ever chase to win in a T20I and the best ever in the World T20.

Moeen finished eight not out from 10 deliveries as England overcame a nervy final over in which Abbott dismissed Chris Jordan and then David Willey was run out.

Victory was just the tonic England needed after the opening game defeat against the West Indies when ex Worcestershire player Chris Gayle hit a brilliant 100.

Eoin Morgan put the Proteas into bat and they rattled up 229-4 in their 20 overs.

Moeen finished with figures of 2-34 in four overs and was England's most economical bowler.

The 28-year.-old could have broken through in his first over only for Reece Toply to spill a chance at mid off offered by Hashim Amla on nine.

Moeen came back into the attack and made the first breakthrough at 96 in the eighth over when Quinton de Kock (52) was caught at deep mid wicket by former Worcestershire loanee Alex Hales.

He also finally accounted for Amla (58) when he aimed a shot on the leg side and was trapped lbw.

An aggressive 43 off 21 balls from Jason Roy gave England a flying start and then Joe Root struck a superb 89 off 44 deliveries.
