Moeen In World Cup 30 But England Suffer Third Setback Against Sri Lanka

Moeen In World Cup 30 But England Suffer Third Setback Against Sri Lanka

Moeen Ali has been named in England's initial 30 man squad for the ICC World Cup which is being staged in Australia and New Zealand from February.

But England suffered a six wicket defeat against Sri Lanka in the fourth One-Day International in Colombo today.

The home side chased down a 266 target with two balls to spare and now lead the best of seven series 3-1.

The inclusion of Worcestershire all-rounder Moeen in the 30 is no surprise given his form on the current tour of Sri Lanka.

Moeen has had scores of 119, two, 58 and today 19 in the four One-Day Internationals in addition to another half century in the warm-up game with Sri Lanka 'A.'

He has a total of one hundred and three fifties in just nine ODI innings since first being selected for last winter's tour of the West Indies.

Today Moeen hit three fours in making 19 off 20 balls before being stumped by Kumar Sangakkara off spinner Thilakaratne Dilshan and being second out with the total on 29.

He had a new opening partner in Alex Hales in the absence of the suspended skipper Alastair Cook.

A fine 90 from James Taylor and 62 from stand-in skipper Eoin Morgan were England's main contributions.

Moeen initially came into the attack for the seventh over and struck when Kusal Perera (31) pushed forward to a delivery that turned away and edged to Chris Jordan who took a sharp catch at slip.

It was Moeen's eighth ODI wicket with Sri Lanka 69-2 in the 15th over.

Moeen finished with figures of 1-44 from his 10 overs – the second most economical spell behind Chris Jordan who bowled well in returning 2-35 from 10 overs.

But Sri Lanka reached their target in the final over to leave England needing to win all three remaining matches to take the series.

The England selectors are expected to announce a squad for the Tri-Series against Australia and India and a 15-man squad for the World Cup later this month, shortly after the current tour of Sri Lanka ends.

The full 30 man squad is: Alastair Cook (Essex) (Capt), Moeen Ali (Worcestershire), James Anderson (Lancashire), Jonathan Bairstow (Yorkshire), Gary Ballance (Yorkshire), Ian Bell (Warwickshire), Ravi Bopara (Essex), Tim Bresnan (Yorkshire), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire),Jack Brooks (Yorkshire), Jos Buttler (Lancashire), Steven Finn (Middlesex), Harry Gurney (Nottinghamshire), Alex Hales (Nottinghamshire), Chris Jordan (Sussex), Craig Kieswetter (Somerset), Eoin Morgan (Middlesex), Stephen Parry (Lancashire), Samit Patel (Nottinghamshire),Liam Plunkett (Yorkshire), Boyd Rankin (Warwickshire), Adil Rashid (Yorkshire), Joe Root (Yorkshire), Jason Roy (Surrey), Ben Stokes (Durham), James Taylor (Nottinghamshire), James Tredwell (Kent), James Vince (Hampshire), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire), Luke Wright (Sussex).
