Moeen Makes 22 After Getting Nod To Open Against Pakistan ‘a’

Moeen Ali opened the batting for England in their first warm-up match in the UAE against Pakistan 'A' at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

The Worcestershire all-rounder is in contention with Alex Hales to open alongside skipper Alastair Cook in the forthcoming three-match Test series against Pakistan.

Moeen made 22 from 46 deliveries with two fours when he hooked at Zia-ul-Haq and was dismissed by a fine diving catch by Ehsan Ali at long leg.

The 28-year-old had figured in a stand of 44 in 18 overs with Cook who had won the toss and elected to bat in the two-day match.

Moeen launched his England career by batting at the top of the order alongside Michael Lumb in the ODI series against the West Indies in the Caribbean 20 months ago.

He repeated the move alongside Cook in the ODI series in Sri Lanka last winter.

Moeen had initially batted at number six in the Test line-up but dropped down to number eight in the Ashes and enjoyed considerable success in that role.

Now he is in the frame to open with Adam Lyth not included in the party for this tour.

Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Cook and Adil Rashid scored half-centuries as England closed day one on 286-5 from 90 overs.
