Moeen Ali was not required with bat or ball as England enjoyed the better fortunes on the opening day of the fourth Imvestec Test with India at Emirates Old Trafford.
The Worcestershire all-rounder had taken career best figures of 6-67 to help England to victory in the third Test at the Ageas Bowl a week ago.
But this time it was the turn of the England seamers to wreak havoc after India chose to bat following a half hour delay because of overnight rain.
Stuart Broad was the chief destroyer with 6-25 as India, who were 8-4 at one stage, were bowled out for 152 in 46.4 overs despite 71 from skipper MS Dhoni who chose to bat after winning the toss.
Broad's new ball partner James Anderson returned 3-46 and Chris Jordan 1-27 in an unchanged side.
With Jordan used as a nightwatchman, Moeen will now be expected to bat at number seven behind Joe Root.
Moeen was not needed to bowl even a single over before India were dismissed.
Then in an elongated final session, England reached 113-3 from 35 overs by the close for the loss of Sam Robson, skipper Alastair Cook and Gary Ballance.
