Oxley And Barrett Impress Before Dell Steers Seconds Ahead

Triallists Nick Oxley and Joe Barrett impressed for Worcestershire Seconds before Josh Dell steered them into a first innings lead on the opening day of the Championship match with Lancashire Seconds at Barnt Green.

Slow left armer Oxley, who has played for Sussex Seconds and MCC Young Cricketers, picked up four wickets as the visitors were bowled out for 194 after electing to bat.

Then Barrett, who has played for Gloucestershire Seconds and MCC Young Cricketers, hit 60 – and then Dell (71 not out) helped Worcestershire to 204-6 by the close.

Another triallist in Tom Sturgess made a double breakthrough with the new ball as Rob Jones (7) was caught behind and Danny Lamb (0) edged to second slip with 11 on the board.

Ben Twohig accounted for England Test opener Haseeb Hameed (24) – caught at first slip – and West Indian great, Shivnarine Chanderpaul (21) holed out to long-on off Zen Malik.

The Lancashire innings was held together by Josh Bohannon who made 93 off 138 balls with one six and 12 fours before he was ninth out, lbw to Oxley.

Oxley also sent back Bradley Yates (11) lbw, had Toby Lester (1) caught at mid wicket and bowled Liam Hurt (16) on his way to final figures of 4-34.

Malik picked up another wicket as Dell onto another chance at first slip to dismiss Sam Oldham (2) while Twohig had George Balderson (2) leg before.

Sturgess finished with 2-21, Malik 2-29 and Twohig 2-67.

When Worcestershire batted, skipper Ollie Westbury (17) hit four early boundaries before he edged Lester to first slip while fellow opener Jack Haynes (12) was caught in the gulley off Lamb.

Lester also got rid of Malik (5) and Alex Milton (3) cheaply to leave Worcestershire on 67-4.

But then Barrett, who made two half centuries AGAINST Worcestershire for MCC YC in the recent game at High Wycombe, and Dell launched a Seconds recovery with the bat.

They put on 78 for the fifth wicket and Barrett had made 60 from 100 balls with eight fours before he nicked Tom Lawson to first slip.

Twohig (10) fell in the same manner off Tom Lawson but Dell followed up his 66 yesterday in the Trophy game between the two teams with another fine knock.
