Director Of Cricket Steve Rhodes was delighted with a "general good team effort with the bat" as Worcestershire enjoyed a productive opening day of the Specsavers County Championship clash with Sussex at New Road.
Brett D'Oliveira (99), Joe Clarke (82) and Ross Whiteley (51 not out) all passed the half century mark but Daryl Mitchell, Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Alexei Kervezee also all played their part in full.
Worcestershire eventually closed on 382-4 from 96 overs after electing to bat.
Rhodes said: "It was a good wicket. We know that wicket in particular goes through a little bit. It came on nicely for the batters but they still needed to bat well.
"There are balls in it that can get you out. I'm really pleased with the team batting effort today.
"Mitch and Dolly started us off and put in a great foundation and it was such a shame Dolly didn't make three figures but he played wonderfully as did all the players – Joe Clarke coming in, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Alexei Kervezee's contribution and Ross Whiteley at the end.
"It was just a general good team effort which I was very pleased with."
As regards the toss, Rhodes said: "We didn't mind losing it either because there is good carry so, if you get the ball in the right areas, there is the chance of nicks.
"I am hoping tomorrow it might liven up a bit as well, might get a little bit more pace. It is just starting to go a little bit more up and down with that second new ball.
"As time goes on in the game, hopefully there are a few cracks and it might just start to get a little bit more up and down which is a good thing if you can get a score on the board."
Rhodes was delighted to see Whiteley show the hitting power that has become his trademark.
He said: "I am really pleased he played like that. Ross is definitely the type of player that will have a few low scores.
"But when he goes well, he can take a session or even a game away from the opposition.
"That is what is so exciting about Ross. He is not going to be the most consistent with scoring – but when he does score, he can do it at a devastating rate and change a game.
"It was particularly pleasing to see him being positive because that way he can take it to the opposition."
Rhodes is hoping Kohler-Cadmore and Whiteley can maintain the positive tone tomorrow which he felt was set by Mitchell and D'Oliveira in their opening stand of 113 in 36 overs.
He said: "The run rate was set by the openers and they were outstanding with their running between the wickets.
"They were really busy and put the fielders under pressure as well as the bowlers and that meant when they bowled a 'four' ball, they were in a great position and good frame of mind to put it away for four.
"They set the tone on the way we scored.
"We will look to push on tomorrow. We've got two very aggressive players at the crease and if they can get a start, hopefully they can get some runs for us and get them relatively quickly once again."
