Rhodes Salutes Form Of Mitchell And Believes He “should Be Mentioned For England”

Steve Rhodes has paid tribute to the form of Worcestershire skipper Daryl Mitchell and feels the opening batsman "should be mentioned for England."

Mitchell took his run tally in the LV = County Championship to 1207 at an average of 86.21 for the season with a magnificent 167 not out against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham – the third time in his career he has carried his bat.

He is also the county's leading run scorer in the NatWest T20 Blast with 326 at an average of 40.75.

Director of Cricket Rhodes believes Mitchell's form should not go unnoticed by the England selectors.

He said: "Once again I want to compliment the season Mitch has had. He has been unbelievable really. He has now got five centuries in first class cricket which is a terrific effort and his run tally is right up there with the best of them.

"The way he has played Twenty20, and the run tally he has got opening the batting, has been tremendous and also I anticipate a good 50 over campaign because, when opening the batting last season in the 40 over campaign, he had a great season.

"You add that together with his qualities of now being an experienced player and an experienced captain who has got better and better as the years have gone on, 30 years of age, with plenty of cricket ahead of him.

"He is as good a second slip fielder as I've seen in the competition and he is the type of guy again that I think should be mentioned for England."

Former England wicket-keeper Rhodes added: "It's easy for coaches to fly the flag for their players. I'm being realistic in saying that he has got a game plan that works and I see no reason why it couldn't hold him in good stead for international honours.

"There are others who don't get a look-in and Daryl knows that too.

"All I'm saying is the guy shouldn't go unnoticed and if his name is mentioned in selection and is turned down, that's all you can ask for."
