Rhodes Shines With The Bat As Northies Take Control On Day One

Rhodes Shines With The Bat As Northies Take Control On Day One

George Rhodes hit an unbeaten half century to put North Canberra Gungahlin in control on day one of the ACT Premier Cricket first grade clash against visiting Queanbeyan District.

The Worcestershire all-rounder took his run tally for the winter in first grade cricket past the 400 mark and he is the Northies leading scorer.

Queanbeyan, for whom Ed Barnard played last winter, were put into bat, and were bowled out for 123 in 55 overs.

Rhodes did not have much opportunity to add to his tally of 22 wickets – the club's second highest in 2015-2016 – and he bowled only six overs for 10 runs.

But he soon made an impact with the bat as he achieved his third 50 plus score of the season after his 100 not out versus ANU and 54 against Ginninderra.

The Northies ran into some early problems and at one stage were 45-3 in reply.

But by the close Rhodes was unbeaten on 64 and had steered his side to 118-4 from 40 overs – just five runs in arrears.

Now North Canberra will look to push for outright victory on day two of the fixture next weekend.

Rhodes has scored 410 runs at an average of 34.17 and taken 22 wickets at 18.86 apiece.
