Alan Richardson is backing Worcestershire paceman George Scrimshaw to put his injury frustrations behind him and become “a real valuable asset to the side in years to come.”
Scrimshaw is regarded as one of the County’s many promising pace prospects along with the likes of Dillon
Pennington and Adam Finch – with another in Josh Tongue having become a first team regular during the past two years.
He made his breakthrough into the senior side mid-way through the 2017 season when he made four appearances in the T20 Blast.
Scrimshaw was also part of the ECB Pace Programme that winter before missing most of last season with back and rib injuries.
But Scrimshaw has been able to play a full part in training this winter and to start his back to bowling programme last week and Richardson has no doubts about his potential and what he can eventually deliver with the ball.
Bowling Coach-Assistant Coach Richardson said: “It is incredibly frustrating for George. You’ve got someone there you think has got high potential, great physicality about him.
“He is a big tall lad who can bowl quickly and he has been through the ringer the last couple of years.
“It has been a real challenge but as long he keeps working as hard as he is, keeps believing, then he will come out the other side for sure.
“We are certainly going to be patient with him because we’ve seen someone there who in years to come will be a real valuable asset to the side.
“Hopefully he can just relax into it and get a nice run of games this summer, which he has not had for a little while.”
Finch is currently on Young Lions duty in Bangladesh preparing for the two Tests, three ODIs and one T2OI.
Richardson said: “Adam is a really impressive young lad.
“I’ve only been with him less than 12 months because he was involved in and around the Young Lions (Under-19s) last winter as well and during the summer he had exams and was again with the Under-19s so I didn’t get to see much of him.
“But he has always really impressed, yes with his bowling which is really promising, but also with the attitude and mindset that he has.
“He is continually pushing himself and fitness levels wise he has kicked on and is giving all the older boys a nice little nudge in that they have got someone who is young and hungry who is going to be challenging them which is great.”
