Saeed Backs Worcestershire “to Finish Job” And Gain Promotion

Saeed Ajmal is backing Worcestershire to finish off the task he helped them start by gaining promotion to Division One of the LV = County Championship.

The Pakistan spin star will be keeping a keen eye on events at New Road from afar after taking 63 wickets in his nine game spell at New Road.

Worcestershire went into today's (Monday's) clash with Gloucestershire at Cheltenham holding a 22 point lead over Hampshire and 27 over third placed Surrey – and with a game in hand.

Saeed said: "We look like we are going up to Division One. The boys are working hard. They probably need to win one or two more games to go up.

"With the win last week over Leicestershire, and with Hampshire not winning (losing to Essex), the gap is a little bigger and we are a little nearer to promotion.

"Wherever I am, I will be keeping an eye on the results for the rest of the season.

"They can do it, the can finish the job. The young bowlers are bowling well, Charlie Morris is bowling well, Jack Shantry and Joe Leach who has bowled well since he came into the team.

"All three bowlers are performing. We have one injured in Gareth Andrew, and we are missing him also.

"But now they have Mitchell McClenaghan to help them, a good bowler, a nice guy. I think it is a good choice to sign him.

"The batting is good as well, especially Daryl Mitchell, top of the averages and he is doing well.

"In the last few games the youngsters Tom Fell and Tom Kohler-Cadmore are also batting well.

"It is good they are going like that at this time of the season. The pitches this time of the year are dry and good for batting."

Saeed also believes Worcestershire Rapids can reach finals day in the NatWest T20 Blast for the first time.

Victory against Derbyshire Falcons at New Road this Friday will take the Rapids through to the quarter-finals.

Saeed said: "We have a very good balanced side, the good youngsters perform well and the fielding is excellent as well with the youngsters working hard on that part of the game.

"I reckon we can get through to the final of that. I know they have never been to a semi-final or final.

"This time they are looking good. Their confidence is high as well."
