Worcestershire 2017 NatWest T20 Blast player Mitchell Santner put IPL disappointment behind him to help New Zealand end South Africa's long unbeaten run in ODI cricket.
All-rounder Santner had been one of the unsold players listed at the IPL auction in which Ben Stokes attracted a £1.7 million bid.
But he responded in positive fashion with the ball as the Black Caps triumphed by six runs in Christchurch in the second match of the series.
It ended South Africa's run of 12 successive ODI victories and levelled the series at 1-1.
Santner ended with 2-46 from 10 overs and dismissed JP Duminy and Wayne Parnell.
South Africa, who had been set a target of 290 in their 50 overs, almost pulled the game out of the fire but closed on 283-9.
Santner accounted for Duminy (34) after he came down the wicket to the spinner and was stumped by Tom Latham at 108-3 in the 22nd over.
He then trapped Wayne Parnell lbw for a duck at 214-8 and at that juncture New Zealand looked set for a comfortable win.
But Dwaine Pretorious (50) and Andile Phehlukwayo (29 not out) added 61 for the ninth wicket before the home side edged home.
Santner will link up for a second spell at New Road for the T20 Blast North Group programme after the completion of the ICC Trophy.
