Worcestershire Seconds fought back with the experimental orange ball after a first innings collapse handed Hampshire Seconds a lead of 125 on day two of the four-day clash at the Ageas Bowl Nursery Ground.
George Scrimshaw impressed with the new ball for the second time in the game and he ended the day with figures of 3-28 as Hampshire closed on 102-6 – an overall advantage of 227.
Hampshire had resumed in their first innings on 308-7 and spinner Ben Twohig took two of the last three wickets to fall as they were dismissed for 358 in 109 overs.
Twohig ended with 3-82 from 21 overs and there were two wickets apiece for Scrimshaw, Pat Brown and Billy Cox.
Worcestershire lost openers Ollie Westbury and Will Fraine but then Alexei Kervezee and Ross Whiteley opted for an aggressive approach in adding 108 in just 13 overs.
Kervezee made 58 off 50 balls with one six and nine fours and Whiteley a typically robust 65 from 53 deliveries with four sixes and seven fours.
But after reaching 157-2, Kervezee was caught at first slip off Andy Carter while Whiteley holed out to deep mid wicket off leg spinner Mason Crane.
Only Alex Milton (32) of the remaining batsmen reached double figures as the Seconds were bowled out for 233 in 52.4 overs.
When Hampshire batted for a second time, Scrimshaw helped to reduce them to 28-4.
