Seconds Take Maximum Bowling Points Before Battle With The Bat

Seconds Take Maximum Bowling Points Before Battle With The Bat

Worcestershire Seconds secured maximum bowling points but then had a challenging time with the bat on the opening day of the Championship match with Nottinghamshire Seconds at Stourbridge.

The visitors were bowled out for 345 with spinner Ben Twohig and skipper Ollie Westbury picking up three wickets – with the latter dismissing centurion and opener Chris Gibson.

It ensured the Seconds tucked away another haul of four bowling points on their return to Championship action after the Trophy success was confirmed today (see separate story).

A reshuffled batting line-up lost seven wickets for 33 runs by the close.

Luke Wood (4-14) and Mark Footitt (3-2) shared the wickets for Nottinghamshire but there is still some good batting to come for the Seconds.

Tom Fell, unavailable for the opening day, and opener George Rhodes, sent home at lunch-time today because of illness, will be available to come to the crease tomorrow.

Academy coach Elliot Wilson, who is overseeing this particular Seconds game, fielded for the majority of the day.

Gibson hit one six and 11 fours in his 132 off 236 balls and shared in several useful partnerships before he was sixth out at 291.

There was an encouraging return after an ankle injury for England Under-19 paceman Dillon Pennington who sent down 12 overs and claimed the wicket of Nottinghamshire opener Jake Libby.

Experienced paceman Steve Magoffin also had a useful run-out in preparation for when the County return to Specsavers County Championship action later this month.
