Shantry In Seven Wicket Haul As Seconds On Top Against Notts

Shantry In Seven Wicket Haul As Seconds On Top Against Notts

Worcestershire paceman Jack Shantry played his first Second Eleven Championship match for four years and wreaked havoc on day one of the match with Nottinghamshire Seconds at RGS Worcester.

Shantry, who was not included in the squad for the Specsavers County Championship match away to Kent, returned 7-39 from 15.5 overs.

The 28-year-old, who has found it a challenge to take wickets on the flatter pitches this summer, bowled unchanged after taking the new ball as Notts were bowled out for 96 after electing to bat.

Then a half century from Seconds opener Will Fraine helped the home side open up a lead of 54 in reaching 150-3 when the players went off for bad light.

Notts actually reached 37-0 after a delayed start but then 10 wickets went down for 59 runs.

Opener Sam Wood made 36 and Dominic Brown was last out for 26 but none of the other batsmen lasted long against Shantry.

He just fell short of his career best Second Eleven figures of 7-34 against Leicestershire at Himley in 2008.

Notts did not help their cause with some of their shot selection and three of the top four were caught at mid wicket.

Skipper Alex Hepburn (2-34) and Pat Brown (1-5) were the other wicket-takers for Worcestershire.

When they began their reply, opener George Newton was caught behind for a duck but then Fraine and Alexei Kervezee added 67 for the second wicket before the latter on 44 also edged through to the keeper.

Fraine was then joined by Alex Hepburn and the pair added a further 48.

Hepburn (33) was run out attempting a second run behind square but Fraine had moved onto 65 from 98 balls with nine fours when light intervened.
