Sharp Delighted With Academy Product Newton Debut For Seconds

Second Eleven coach Kevin Sharp was delighted with the debut of Academy player George Newton in the Championship match with Lancashire at RGS Worcester.

Newton, one of two new members of the Academy for 2015-2016, showed great application in Worcestershire's first innings in making 73.

His innings spanned more than four hours and 226 deliveries.

Keeper Alex Milton also gave another demonstration of his qualities with a half century as Worcestershire earned a first innings lead of 50 before a second innings collapse saw them go down by eight wickets.

Sharp, who is also the County's batting coach, said: "It was a tremendous debut. He is a young lad with a solid technique and a great temperament.

"He is another one who has come into the Seconds and held his own.

"Alex Milton is a fine cricketer, a great solid lad who keeps very tidily and bats really nicely so there were lots of positives."

Sharp added: "The lads played really well first innings, quite slow progress on a pitch that offered a bit to the seamers and the spin.

"With a fairly inexperienced batting line-up we've shown some real resilience and made 285 and bowled Lancashire out for 50 less than that and so we were in quite a good position.

"Then in all fairness I think Lancashire bowled really, really well in our second innings. It was first class bowling for an hour towards the end of the second day and they blew us away a bit.

"There was kind of a cross between some good deliveries and perhaps a little bit of indecisiveness at times with the bat.

"We suddenly lost four or five wickets for nothing and it was always going to be difficult then to recover from that.

"The thing is in the longer form of the game if you lose a session badly it can generally cost you the game and that's what happened."
