Six Wicket Haul For Tongue As Seconds Dismiss Hants For 161

Josh Tongue produced the best figures by a Worcestershire bowler in Second Eleven Cricket this summer on day two of the four-day match with Hampshire Seconds at Kidderminster.

The 17-year-old paceman had taken the only wicket to fall in the two overs play possible on the opening day.

And Tongue, who recently signed his first professional contract with the County, carried on in the same vein and finished with 6-27 from 17 overs.

His efforts surpassed the previous best figures this summer of 6-31 by Ed Barnard in a Championship match against Nottinghamshire at Notts Sports Club.

It was the latest example of Worcestershire reaping the benefits for playing members of their flourishing Academy in the Second Eleven this summer.

Spinner Ben Twohig, 6-74 versus Lancashire at Southport, and Chris Russell, 6-104 v Northants at Milton Keynes, were the other players to register six wicket hauls this summer – also both in the Championship.

Only Hampshire middle order batsman Andrew Gorvin offered much resistance in making 66 as his side were dismissed for 161 in 56.2 overs.

He came in at 55-4 and was last out having faced 119 balls and hit one six and six fours.

Twohig, who like Tongue will start his first professional contract next month, finished with 2-19 with Graeme Whiles and Russell collecting one wicket apiece.

Worcestershire in reply reached 74-2 off 20 overs before bad light ended play. Skipper George Rhodes (0) was trapped lbw after offering no shot and Alexei Kervezee, having made 36 off 41 balls with six fours, played back and departed in the same manner after adding 59 with Ollie Westbury.

Westbury was unbeaten on 20 at the close with Zen Malik six not out.
