Worcestershire Director of Cricket Steve Rhodes gives his thoughts on day one of the LV = County Championship match with Somerset at Taunton to BBC Hereford-Worcester's sports producer Trevor Owens.

Steve Rhodes said: "They've had a great day. James Hildreth has played really well and thoroughly deserves the runs he has got. We had a couple of close lbw shouts, which we thought might have gone our way, but apart from that he has hit the bat most of the time and played a really good innings.

"We could have been a bit better with the ball, particularly in that first session when there were helpful conditions but sadly for us they got away in that first session and set up a platform for the rest of the day.

"The ball didn't do quite as much as we thought it would but having said that there was enough there in that first session if we had bowled a little bit better to make three or four inroads which is what you want when you put a side into bat.

"Our bowlers have been tremendous all season and they are going to have a little bit of an off day but having said that there was some good stuff as well. The first spell from Shants was excellent, Leachy at times bowled well and Charlie at times bowled well.

"The spinners did a reasonable job keeping the score down a bit. Brett D'Oliveira is bowling the other end to Saeed Ajmal which is a great experience. His figures were better than Ajmal so he will take a lot of pride and joy from that. To get better at this game, as a bowler you need to get those deliveries under your belt.

"The wicket did flatten out a bit as the ball got older and made life slightly easier for the Somerset batsmen. But let's not take anything away from the Somerset batters, particularly Hildreth who played a lovely innings.

"Marcus Trescothick also played well. We were rueing that dropped catch (by Tom Fell off Ross Whiteley) just before lunch but having said that thankfully we got him out before he got to a hundred (85) and there were some good partnerships throughout the innings and they've ended in a reasonably comfortable position.

"The important thing for us is when we do get our chance to bat, we've got to make sure we don't bat tired. We've got to make sure we are fully on the ball, switched on and concentrating well and hopefully we can bat just as well as Somerset.

"We need to come back on the second day and have a really good morning. If we can do that and get through them, we then need to do the hard work of chasing a total."
