worcestershire cricket society are already pressing ahead with plans for the 2018-2019 winter programme – and it will mean a welcome return to New Road for ted hemsley.
thanks to the efforts of society president and stand-in chairman mike vockins, ted has agreed be the guest speaker on tuesday, november 13.
it follows on from former england spinner and ex national selector geoff miller having already been lined up for the october 9 meeting.
ted hemsley played for worcestershire for the best part of two decades and was one of the last of the cricketer-footballers alongside his county team-mate and captain phil neale.
he made his worcestershire debut in 1963 but had to wait until 1967 to become established in the side.
the stoke on trent born player was capped in 1969 and was part of the worcestershire side which won the county championship in 1974 under skipper norman gifford.
in his career, ted scored 9,740 first class runs at an average of 29.33, playing 243 games, and 4,023 list a runs. his medium pacers also brought 70 first class and 73 list a wickets.
ted, now aged 74, played league football for shrewsbury from 1961-68, sheffield united from 1968-77 – helping them to promotion to the first division in 1970-71 – and doncaster from 1977-79.
he actually played for worcestershire in a county championship match at bramall lane during his spell as a sheffield united player.
