Josh Tongue made his England Under-19 debut and picked up the first India Under-19s wicket to fall on the opening day of the first 'Test' at Queen's Park, Chesterfield.
The Worcestershire paceman was one of four debutants for the Under-19s along with Ollie Robinson, Matt Potts and Ryan Patel.
Before the start of play the quartet were each presented with an Under-19s cap by former Lancashire captain John Abrahams, a member of the three-man selection panel.
India were put in by England captain Max Holden and Tongue, an ever-present for Worcestershire in the Specsavers County Championship this season, claimed the early breakthrough England wanted on a fresh, bright morning.
He dismissed India's captain Himanshu Rana for a duck courtesy of an excellent catch by Somerset’s Ben Green diving forward from mid-wicket.
But India's batsmen dominated proceedings and reached 389-6 in 90 overs by the close with opener Prithvi Shaw stroking a rapid 86 before lunch, and left-hander Manjot Kalra maintaining the pace with a stylish 122 from 117 balls.
There were two stoppages for rain and bad light, and by the time play finished at 650pm, the Cheeky Girls were rounding off the Chesterfield Pride festival which was also being held in Queen’s Park, and provided a loud disco soundtrack to the afternoon.
Tongue did not add to his early success and finished with 1-55 from 16 overs although he returned after lunch to bowl a lively spell from the Pavilion End without any luck.
Surrey off-spinner Amar Virdi claimed three wickets and there was one each for seamers Potts and Henry Brookes, while Kent wicketkeeper Robinson took two catches in a tidy performance behind the stumps.
