Tongue Poised To Make England Under-19S Test Debut

Tongue Poised To Make England Under-19S Test Debut

Worcestershire CCC paceman Josh Tongue is poised to finally make his England Under-19s debut in the first 'Test' with India Under-19s beginning at Queen's Park, Chesterfield tomorrow (Sunday).

Tongue will be looking to make the same sort of impact which has brought him 34 Specsavers County Championship wickets in his first season of senior cricket at New Road.

He was selected for last summer's Under-19s series against Sri Lanka but was injured in a warm-up game.

Worcestershire bowing coach Matt Mason said: "He deserves his opportunity. Playing for your country, no matter what the level, is a great honour.

"We've already had some feedback from the ECB about how Josh has done this week and they have absolutely sung his praises about what a great character he is, how good he looks and how professional he has been.

"That is good news. He just needs to go out there now and perform and enjoy the experience.

"We all know he is a class young fast bowler but he has still got lots to learn. With the likes of Kevin Shine (bowling coach), looking out for him with the Under-19s, he is going to learn plenty.

"I'm also sure when that Test match is done he will be looking forward to getting back here and playing some of this T20 stuff as well."

England squad: Max Holden (Middlesex, capt), Liam Banks (Warwickshire), George Bartlett (Somerset), Harry Brook (Yorkshire), Henry Brookes (Warwickshire), Ben Green (Somerset), Will Jacks (Surrey), George Panayi (Warwickshire), Ryan Patel (Surrey), Liam Patterson-White (Nottinghamshire), Matt Potts (Durham), Ollie Robinson (Kent, wk), Harry Swindells (Leicestershire, wk), Josh Tongue (Worcestershire), Amar Virdi (Surrey).
