worcestershire were last in county championship action against tomorrow’s opponents sussex at kidderminster’s chester road in 1988 – the year they won the title for the fourth time.
on that occasion in august, worcestershire won by nine wickets early on the third morning.
sussex won the toss and were bowled out for 146 despite 60 from ian gould – now an icc test umpire – with paceman phil newport (5-62) inflicting most of the damage.
worcestershire lost four wickets for 82 before skipper phil neale (167) and all-rounder martin weston (94) put on 183 for the fifth wicket out of a total of 370.
sussex were then dismissed for 237, with alan wells and tony pigott scoring half centuries, and newport was again amongst the wickets with 4-66.
neal radford provided fine support with figures of 10-1-29-2 and 23-7-66-3.
current worcestershire vice-chairman paul pridgeon also gave little away in either innings with returns of 8-1-19-1 and 17-3-48-2 respectively.
worcestershire openers paul bent and gordon lord knocked off the 14 runs for victory.
the fixture took place on august 6, 8 and 9 with the two teams breaking off after the first day to play a refuge assurance league (40 over) game at New Road on the sunday afternoon (august 7).
tomorrow’s match – switched from New Road to kidderminster – will get underway at 11am.
