Worcestershire V Lancashire Day One Reaction

worcestershire century-maker daryl mitchell has given his reaction to day one of the specsavers county championship match with lancashire at New Road.

mitchell scored his 32nd first class century as worcestershire totalled 247 and then reduced lancashire to 86-5 by the close after ed barnard’s four wicket blast.

daryl mitchell said: “the flurry of wickets at the end was good for us. we managed to scrap to a total which was okay.

“it did a bit this morning certainly and there is still the odd ball in the wicket doing something.

“i thought the lads bowled well this evening without much luck early on and we got our rewards right at the death.

“it was hard work first thing, definitely. we hadn’t had a lot of (championship) preparation with the one-day cup semi-final and the cloud cover came over and the little bit of moisture in the wicket meant it did plenty both in the air and off the wicket.

“we scrapped pretty hard this morning. we put together a couple of small partnerships. we would have liked to have got to lunch with three or four down rather than five.

“but barny (ed barnard) and ross (whiteley) played well down the order and it was important to get over the 200 mark.

“it would have been nice to get the extra point at 250 but unfortunately we just missed that.

“is 247 a par score? i think so. the wicket certainly got easier to bat on as the day wore on but there were still plenty of play and misses even when someone was in and balls were still beating the bat.

“there was plenty in there for the bowlers if you got the balls in the right areas.

“hopefully with that morning dew tomorrow, we can get the ball in the right areas and get another couple of quick wickets.”
