Worcs Launch County Championship Campaign With Kent Home Clash

Worcs Launch County Championship Campaign With Kent Home Clash

Worcestershire will launch their County Championship Division Two campaign with a home fixture against Kent on Sunday, April 10.

Skipper Daryl Mitchell and his side will be bidding to bounce back and mount a promotion challenge after last season's relegation from the top flight.

The same fixture also marked the start of Worcestershire's home campaign in 2014 and on that occasion they triumphed by 125 runs.

After conceding a first innings lead of five runs, Ben Cox's 89 was a crucial second innings knock before Gareth Andrew, Charlie Morris and Jack Shantry bowled Kent out for 140.

The accent will be on facing sides from the South in the opening trio of home Championship matches.

Essex will be the visitors on May 1 and a fortnight later Sussex, who like Worcestershire will be bidding to regain their Division One status at the first attempt, provide the opposition at New Road.

The County will play seven Championship matches by the beginning of June but then the accent will switch to the white ball game in the NatWest T20 Blast and Royal London One-Day Cup.

This season there will be two blocks of cricket where the RLC will be predominantly played during the first part of the week and the T20 Blast during the back end.

Worcestershire Rapids will be striving to show the superb form of 2015 when they reached the quarter-finals of the T20 Blast after winning six successive away matches.

That secured the Rapids a first ever home quarter-final in the competition after finishing in the top two of the North Group.

This season Durham Jets will be the first T20 Blast opposition at New Road on Friday, May 20.

Home Friday night T20 Blast games proved immensely popular last season and five of the seven group fixtures will again take place at New Road on that day in 2016.

The Rapids Royal London Cup campaign will kick off with a home fixture against Derbyshire Falcons on Sunday, June 5.

There are also three tour fixtures for supporters to look forward including the two-day match against Pakistan on July 29 and 30.

But in addition the club are proud to hold another Women's One-Day International between England and Pakistan in June and a four-day game between Pakistan 'A' and Sri Lanka 'A' the following month.

Worcs CCC memberships for 2016 are currently available to purchase but matchday admission tickets will not go on sale until Wednesday, December 9.
