Worcs Star Moeen Voted Birmingham Sportsman Of The Year

Worcestershire and England all-rounder Moeen Ali has received a prestigious award in recognition of his achievements during 2014.

The 27-year-old has been voted Professional Sportsman Of The Year as part of the annual Birmingham Sports Awards.

Birmingham Knights basketball captain Michael Gayle and British sprinter Danny Talbot were also nominated for the award.

Former Worcestershire paceman and current board member Neal Radford (centre) received the award on Moeen's behalf at the awards ceremony at Villa Park.

Birmingham born Moeen, who was educated at Moseley School, had a year to remember with club and country.

He broke into the England side for the winter tour of the West Indies and ICC World T20 tournament in Bangladesh.

Then Moeen played in all seven Tests this summer and picked up 19 wickets in the five match series against India in addition to scoring his maiden Test century against Sri Lanka at Headingley.

In addition Moeen helped Worcestershire gain promotion to Division One of the LV = County Championship, averaging over 60 from his seven appearances to date this season.

The Birmingham Sports Awards celebrate and reward the outstanding achievements of Birmingham's exceptional sporting successes with there being 13 different categories.

Across professional and amateur sport in the area, disabled and non-disabled people are recognised, demonstrating to the wider community that Birmingham really is home some of the most successful sporting talents and rising stars in the country today.
