Shantry Says 500 First Class Wickets “is Good Target To Set Myself”

Jack Shantry wants to emulate Alan Richardson and top 500 first class wickets in his career and he admitted: "It is a good target to set myself."

Worcestershire bowling coach Matt Mason has already indicated Shantry is capable of reaching such a milestone after he clocked up his 200th wicket during another productive summer.

The left armer followed up his 59 wickets in 2014 with another 67 first class victims in 2015 – including 57 in the LV = County Championship.

Shantry, the winner of the Dick Lygon Award after his sterling efforts with the ball, said: "I suppose you look at it in the long term and you look at the sort of players you want to emulate, someone like an Allan Richardson who has got those 500 wickets.

"That seems a long way off but it seemed an even longer way off three or four years ago when I was only on 50 wickets!

"It shows being boring and doing all the processes and that sort of stuff they talk about, that you can get there little by little.

"I got to the 200 wickets last summer a little bit quicker than I probably thought I would have done.

"But from now on if you manage to take 50 wickets per season, it's still about six seasons away playing every game.

"It's a good target to set myself and hopefully I can get there one day."

Shantry admits he has to put in 100 per cent effort to get the best out of his talents.

He said: "If you are not getting the most out of your ability, then there is something wrong.

"I get absolutely everything out of myself. I am not one of those bowlers who can get by just doing 80 per cent.

"I always pride myself on being able to do a bit with the ball, getting bounce and being very accurate. Those are my three skills."
